Do I need more practice?

A visitor asks whether another method is required, and what answer came back.

Two figures seated facing each other on a temple verandah at dusk

Recorded after an evening sitting, with a visitor’s permission.

Visitor: I have been sitting every morning. Still I feel unfinished. Should I add another practice?

Amma: Unfinished is not a mistake. It is the honest weather of a human day. Adding more can become a way of not staying with what is already here.

Visitor: Then what should I do when restlessness comes?

Amma: Let it come as a guest, not as a king. Feel the body. Feel the breath. Do not decorate the restlessness with a story about your spiritual progress. If the Name is near, let it be near. If silence is near, let silence be enough.

Visitor: I am afraid of wasting time.

Amma: Fear of waste is often ambition wearing modest clothes. Sit. Live cleanly. Be kind in the next conversation. Time is not a ladder you must climb before you are allowed to be still.

Visitor: And if nothing changes?

Amma: Then nothing changes, and you will have spent your mornings quietly instead of anxiously. That is not a small thing.
